April marks two big events for autism, with World Autism Month taking place throughout and World Autism Awareness Day which takes place on April 2. This year marks the 18th annual World Autism Awareness Day.
This day is for focusing on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people living with autism and fostering worldwide support both in person and online.
Why is Autism Awareness Day important
It is important to recognise this day as figures show that eight out of ten individuals with autism face mental health problems.
Only 26% of individuals with autism feel happy in school and only 30% of individuals with autism are in any type of employment.
Individuals with autism face discrimination across many sectors of society, such as in the health and social care systems and in employment and education. It is important that people with autism and their families can access information, guidance and support to overcome these barriers.
Most cases of autism are diagnosed in childhood, with signs beginning to appear during early childhood and typically last throughout a person’s life.
Children with autism spectrum disorder develop social and communication skills in different ways and at different ages than their peers.
There are some adults who get diagnosed with autism, with some learning to manage their differences well, achieving major milestones like relationships or building successful careers. While some others can feel left out of place and have difficulties with certain milestones.
More than one in one hundred people have autism and there are at least 700,000 adults and children with autism in the UK. Therefore, it is important that we raise awareness for this lifelong condition.
How we can help

The team have extensive experience supporting adults with autism and deliver tailored care plans specifically designed for each client to care for those on the autism spectrum.
