From 8–14 June, the UK marks Carers Week 2026, an annual campaign dedicated to recognising the millions of unpaid carers who provide vital support to loved ones every day.
This year’s theme, “Building Carer Friendly Communities”, focuses on creating better recognition, understanding and practical support for unpaid carers across workplaces, healthcare services and local communities.
According to recent research from Carers UK, there are now 5.8 million unpaid carers across the UK, collectively contributing care worth an estimated £184 billion to the economy every year — the equivalent of a second NHS. Despite this, more than 57% of carers report feeling overwhelmed often or always.

Why support for carers matters
Providing ongoing care for a loved one can be physically and emotionally demanding. Many carers balance supporting somebody with a complex condition alongside work, family responsibilities and managing their own health.
For individuals living with neurological conditions, life-changing injuries or long-term disabilities, family members often become a vital part of everyday care.
However, without the right support in place, carers can experience exhaustion, stress and social isolation.
Creating carer friendly communities means recognising these challenges and ensuring carers have access to practical help when they need it most.
The growing need for specialist support
Many individuals living with complex conditions require highly specialised care that can become increasingly difficult for families to manage alone.
Conditions such as:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
- Huntington’s disease
- Cerebral palsy
- Acquired brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Ventilation and airway management needs
can require ongoing clinical support, rehabilitation, mobility assistance and complex daily care routines.
Having access to experienced care professionals can help reduce pressure on unpaid carers whilst ensuring individuals receive safe and consistent care tailored to their needs.
