Mental health: Let’s look out for each other

Looking after your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical health, nowhere more so than in the workplace.

It is vital that everyone at work feels able to talk about their mental health confidently, with employers able to appropriately support the mental wellbeing of all staff.

Mental health is taken incredibly seriously at Synergy Complex Care, which is why we have signed up to the ‘Charter for Employers Positive about Mental Health’.

This means that as an employer we have made an ongoing commitment to providing proactive support to staff experiencing mental ill-health

We are committed to not making any assumptions about a person with a mental health condition and their ability to work and we will enable all employees and job applicants with a mental health condition.

We are also committed to supporting line managers in managing mental health in the workplace.

Mental health affects all of us, out of and inside of work, so here are some top tips to care for your mental health.

Get moving
Regular exercise helps you to concentrate and sleep better, which can help your mental health, while releasing chemicals in your brain to make you feel good. Try to make physical activity part of your daily routine, from gardening to walking the dog.

Eat well and drink sensibly
Eat a balanced diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables as nutritious food is good for the brain as well as the body. Drink plenty of water and avoid drinking too much alcohol, as this can alter your mood.

Get talking
Reach out to your family and friends for a chat. Everyone loves catching up with loved ones and it can play an important role to help you get out of your head and get a different perspective. If you can’t talk face to face, get online or on the phone.

Do something you love
Is there an activity you love doing and can lose yourself in? Take time to do something just for yourself, from drawing to playing an instrument. It is a great way to destress and be in the moment.

Take part in your community

April is Stress Awareness Month with the theme of community to highlight the importance of having a sense of belonging and connection to others. Why not think about ways you can get involved in a community, such as volunteering, taking up a hobby class or joining a sports team. Activities like this help to put your focus outwards and decrease loneliness and isolation which contribute to stress and mental ill-health.
