Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day, which is on 10 September, we are highlighting the importance of talking about your mental health.
With the prevalence of ill mental health on the rise, it is vital to encourage open conversations about how you are feeling and get to the root of any issues.
Raising awareness
The first step is to raise awareness. One in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives so if you are struggling, remember you are not alone.
It can seem daunting but talking to other people about how you are feeling can help you to get the support that you need.
Recognising issues early on is key to preventing tragedies, such as suicide. As part of Samaritans’ World Suicide Prevention Day campaign, they are urging the Government to make suicide prevention a priority.
Breaking the stigma
Challenging the stigma around mental health is essential to combat this.
The media have made some big moves to challenge this, such as the ‘it’s okay not to be okay’ campaign, but there is still work to be done.
If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, do not be afraid to get help. More support can be found at Mental Health Foundation and Mind.
