Ways to manage Parkinson’s disease

It is estimated that over 153,000 people live with Parkinson’s disease in the UK, and it is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world.

Researchers think Parkinson’s disease is a combination of age, genetic, and environmental factors that cause the dopamine-producing nerve cells to die.

Here are three different ways to manage your Parkinson’s:

Monitoring your symptoms

A useful way to monitor your symptoms is by keeping a diary. This is a helpful way of letting your GP, specialist, or Parkinson’s nurse know what problems you’re experiencing.

It can also document the changes in your condition from day to day or over a period of time, and how well your medication is controlling your symptoms.

Staying active and exercising

Did you know that being active for 2.5 hours a week can help manage Parkinson’s symptoms?  The more physically active you are, the easier it is to live well with Parkinson’s.

The right physical activity is different for everyone. Whether that’s playing football for an hour, taking a long walk with the dog, or practising everyday movements, like walking up the stairs.

Physical activity has a positive impact both physically and mentally. It can be as important as getting the right dose of medication.

Exploring different therapies for Parkinson’s

Different therapies will appeal to different people with Parkinson’s:

  • A physiotherapist can help you with posture and movement problems.
  • A speech and language therapist can help you with swallowing problems and any issues with your speech and writing.
  • An occupational therapist can help you do everyday tasks if they become difficult, such as moving around your home.
