The recovery following a life-changing brain injury such as a stroke can be difficult, particularly without the right support on hand.
Depending on the severity of the stroke, your loved one may be required to stay in the hospital for anywhere from a few days to a few months. During this time, rehabilitation will begin.
Recovery from a stroke is fastest within the first few days or weeks. Following this, recovery can slow down, however improvement can continue months and years.
Rehabilitation
Following a stroke, therapists will assess your loved one to set goals for their rehabilitation. These tests will look to see how the stroke has impacted them and what areas need the most support.
These tests include:
- A swallowing test
- Mobility assessment
- Continence assessment
- Communication and cognitive assessments
- Nutritional status and hydration
Through these tests, the healthcare team will be able to set a plan for the therapy, support, and guidance that your loved one will need for their recovery.
Rehabilitation will begin in the hospital with daily therapy. This includes:
- Setting small, manageable goals
- Exercises and activities to support re-learning new skills
- Learning new ways to do tasks such as getting dressed.
Professional support
The team from your loved one’s stroke unit will be leading the recovery following a stroke. These experienced medical professionals make up a multidisciplinary team that work in tandem to deliver the care and support that your loved one needs.
This professional support will continue outside of the hospital, moving to care and support at home.
Having care at home is a key step to helping your loved one adjust to life following a stroke. This on-hand support can help through a variety of issues, from support with personal care and hygiene to guidance with therapies.
