How ventilation support at home encourages independence

Many complex conditions can cause someone to require ventilation or airway support. For many people, this can lead to extended hospital stays if the right care and support are not available at home.

Whilst this was particularly the case in the past, as technology improves, ventilated individuals have greater access to independence and the community.

By working alongside healthcare professionals, we work with patients to provide the medical support that they need in the comfort of their own homes.

Types of ventilation

Generally, ventilation is divided into two categories:

  • Invasive ventilation (IV)
  • Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)

Both types of ventilation typically rely on a medical ventilator. This machine is designed to move air or oxygen in and out of the lungs for people who are unable to breathe on their own.

IV happens when a device is connected to a tracheal cannula or tracheostomy. A medical professional will be required to fit this, but our staff are trained to manage the care thereafter. This will include the upkeep of tubes and devices, mouth care and additional personal care.

For NIV, the ventilator is connected to a mask to help assist breathing. This sometimes will not be all the time, as some individuals may need extra support at night for example.

Additional ventilation support

As well as assisting with IV and NIV, our staff are trained to provide additional support with ventilation.

This includes hand ventilation, which can be delivered with a bag. Typically, hand ventilation is only needed when transporting an individual or there are problems with the medical ventilator.

We can also deliver cough assistance for our clients, for patients unable to clear their airways themselves. Particularly this is important for patients who suffer from neuromuscular disorders, spinal cord injuries, or severe fatigue.

Similarly, our staff are trained to use suction to help keep airways clear.

Independence at home

Care for ventilated individuals is complex and can often limit their lives. That’s why we work closely with healthcare professionals to ensure that our staff are competent to provide all aspects of care at home.

With the improvement of technology and the support of our staff, we are able to create a care plan that is flexible and allows individuals to optimise their lifestyle.

We have plenty of experience supporting ventilated patients to live at home after being discharged from hospital.
