International Day of Persons with Disabilities: 3 December

As a society, how can we improve inclusion for disabled people?

On 3 December, it is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The day, organised by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness of living life with a disability.

What is the purpose of the day?

The day aims to raise awareness around disability inclusion and how we can achieve this.

The theme this year is ‘Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world’.

The UN recognise disability inclusion as a human right and so is committed as an organisation to recognise the rights of disabled persons. To progress disability inclusion, the UN makes a promise for justice and investment in a common future.

The UN also encourage and expect public and private organisations to collaboratively find solutions to make the world a more accessible and equal place for people with disabilities.

How does the UN plan to make a difference for disabled people?

With their theme in mind, on December 3, the organisation will hold a virtual meeting to discuss a plan for progress.

The main areas considered in the meeting will be:

  • Innovation for disability inclusive development in employment
  • Innovation for disability inclusive development in reducing inequality
  • Innovation for disability inclusive development

By analysing disability through these lenses, the UN aims to create a greater understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of disabled people.
