Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong development disability that affects the way people communicate and interact with the world around them.
More than one in 100 people are on the autism spectrum and there are around 700,000 adults and children with autism in the UK alone.
If you have a loved one with autism, you might find that it can be challenging at times to communicate clearly to the individual.
Communication with an ASD adult
We have put together five tips on how to communicate with an adult on the autism spectrum:
- Address them as you would any other adult
It is important to speak to an adult with autism as an adult and not a child. They may understand every word you say but have difficulty responding verbally.
- Say what you mean
When interacting with an adult with ASD, be literal, clear and concise. Avoid using slang, sarcasm or nuance. These forms of communication may be confusing and not easily understood.
- Take time to listen
Being an active listener is a very important skill, taking the time to listen lets the individual know that you care and support them.
- If you ask a question, wait for a response
Adults with autism might need some extra time to absorb and process information before giving you a response. Be patience and wait for the person to reply to you.
- Provide meaningful feedback
Providing feedback that is honest, non-judgemental and clear can help adults with autism learn how to safely navigate complex social interactions in the future.
