Motor neurone disease – early signs and support

In the UK alone, motor neurone disease (MND) affects over 5,000 people at any given time. Generally affecting people over 50, MND causes the premature degeneration of motor neurones in the nervous system.

MND is a progressive, life-shortening disease. However, symptoms can be managed by healthcare professionals and trained care providers to provide the best quality of life possible.

Due to its rarity, MND often needs specialist support. Our team is trained to help with every stage of the disease.

Early symptoms of motor neurone disease

MND may not be immediately diagnosed by a GP. Often, a GP will need to monitor how symptoms progress and may refer patients to a specialist for an official diagnosis.

In most cases, symptoms seen in the early stages of MND can be attributed to other causes. However, some of the common signs of MND include:

  • Fasciculation (muscle twitching)
  • Tingling or pins and needles
  • Numbness (particularly in hands and feet)
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Falling or tripping
  • Thinner legs
  • Stiffness in joints or hands
  • Difficulties with speech and swallowing
  • Changes in behaviour and emotions
  • Breathing problems

Whilst there is a broad range of symptoms, it is often a combination that will be used to diagnose MND. Due to the comorbidity with other diseases, getting an MND diagnosis can be challenging.

What support is available?

As MND is a progressive disease, people may not need as much support in the initial stages.

Having a care plan in place that can adapt to the changing needs of the individual is vital and getting the right support in place from diagnosis can ensure that everyone involved in the delivery of care is aware of the individual’s wishes.

MND affects all aspects of someone’s life. As well as limiting mobility, MND affects brain function, eating, and even breathing. This means that those living with the disease require multiple forms of complex care and support.

We work alongside each person and their loved ones to create a care plan around their individual needs. This ensures that everyone under our care gets the support that they not only need but that they want. Through this, we can help them lead a life that is chosen by them rather than by others.

Complex care providers can help with mobility, personal care, communication, ventilation support, and more. Ensuring that each individual can be as comfortable as possible.
