What skills do you need for a successful career in care?

Considering a career in care? To be successful in this role, you need a unique blend of abilities, from compassion and patience to communication and resilience.

Many of these skills can be transferred from different sectors and experiences, paving the way for a rewarding career ahead.

Our team have outlined their thoughts on the top five skills for success.

Compassion

Working in the care industry involves supporting individuals and their families during some of the most challenging times in their lives, which makes having empathy and compassion essential.

As a Healthcare Support Worker, you need to be able to put yourself in your client’s shoes and have a genuine passion for helping them maximise their independence and quality of life.

Resilience

A career in care is not without its challenges, especially emotional challenges.

Supporting individuals is a hands-on job, which can take a toll on your mental health. This makes understanding how you respond to difficult situations and your emotions vital.

Being driven by a desire to help others will help you to navigate challenges and manage your own feelings effectively.

Adaptability

Every day is different when it comes to home care, making being able to adapt to different scenarios important.

Being able to adjust quickly to changing conditions and respond to each client’s unique needs is an essential skill to have.

This may involve altering your approach based on a client’s mood, health fluctuations, or environmental changes.

Strong problem-solving skills are essential for addressing these challenges, such as adapting a care plan to better suit a client’s needs or managing emergency situations.

Communication

Being a clear, confident communicator is another important skill to be successful in a career in care.

When supporting individuals with complex needs, you need to be able to adapt your communication style to suit them, whether that means picking up on nonverbal cues or slowing your speech.

You need to also be able to listen attentively to your clients, as well as their family and the team, to ensure a collaborative approach to care plans.

Lifelong learning

The saying ‘every day is a school day’ is especially true for a career in care.

The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, meaning a passion for continuous learning is essential.

Our Healthcare Support Workers stay on top of the latest developments to support our clients and ensure we’re providing the best quality care possible.
